-

Sir , the world-renowned British actor, announced his retirement Saturday.

Caine, 90, who starred in iconic movies beginning in the 1960s, quickly rose to superstardom. A two-time Academy Award winner, he has starred in films collectively earning $7.8 billion worldwide.

His credits include “Zulu” (1964), “Alfie” (1966), “The Italian Job” (1969), “Battle of Britain” (1969), “Get Carter” (1971), “The Eagle Has Landed” (1976), “A Bridge Too Far” (1977), “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986), “The Muppet Christmas Carol” (1992), “The Cider House Rules” (1999), “Batman Begins” (2005), “Children of Men” (2006), “The Dark Knight” (2008), “Inception” (2010), “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012), “Interstellar” (2014), “Dunkirk” (2017) and “Tenet” (2020).

From 1952 to 1954, Caine served in the British Army's Royal Fusiliers. While serving in Korea, he witnessed Chinese communist forces launch catastrophic human wave attacks. Seeing these massacres solidified his belief that socialism was not the panacea its supporters claimed. After escaping one particularly life-threatening situation, he vowed to live “every bloody moment” as if it was his last.

Caine's career spanned eight decades and more than 160 films. As he looked back on his body of work this weekend, the artist, who never shed his cockney accent, made a touching remark:

“The only parts I'm liable to get now are 90-year-old men… So I thought, I might as well leave with all this.”
