A congressman won a New Jersey primary despite having passed away.
Donald Payne Jr. won the Democrat primary in New Jersey's 10th Congressional District on Tuesday, uncontested, even though the congressman passed away on April 24.
Homeland Security Committee ranking member Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) honored the New Jersey lawmaker's legacy after his passing.

The beloved congressman and member of the Congressional Black Caucus suffered a fatal heart attack on April 24, according to the New York Post.
New Jersey's filing deadline had already passed at the time of Payne's death, resulting in the deceased congressman running uncontested in the 10th Congressional District.
According to the Washington Examiner, Democratic committee members for the 10th District will select a nominee to replace Payne on the general election ballot in November.
Payne served as the representative for New Jersey's 10th District since November 2012, when his father, Donald Payne Sr., passed away from colon cancer.
In other surprising primary news, New Jersey Republicans opted to turn against Donald Trump-endorsed candidate Mendham Borough Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner was defeated by real estate developer Curtis Bradshaw.
