Former President Donald Trump has returned to Instagram for the first time since Jan. 5, 2021.
The Western Journal reports:
This time, the former president and leading GOP candidate in 2024 had a different focus: hawking non-fungible tokens.
“I am pleased to inform you that, due to the great success of my previously launched DIGITAL TRADING CARDS, we are doing it again, SERIES 2, AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW,” Trump posted, giving instructions for how to buy the collectibles.
The NFTs include artwork of Trump as a rock star, a firefighter and a superhero.
In an audio recording attached to another post, he said that when the first round was released, “We almost broke the internet.”
The release of the first round of NFTs followed the teasing of a “major announcement” by Trump on Truth Social, declaring that “America needs a superhero.”
The digital trading cards cost $99 each (plus a transaction fee).
Meta had previously suspended Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts after the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
The tech conglomerate reinstated Trump's accounts in January, with guardrails to “deter repeat offenses,” Nick Clegg, president of Global Affairs at Meta, stated in a blog post.
“The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying – the good, the bad and the ugly – so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box. But that does not mean there are no limits to what people can say on our platform,” Clegg wrote.
Furthermore, he added, Trump faces “heightened penalties” for future violations, including the possibility of a renewed suspension.
