KBJ's Nomination Advances Out of Judiciary Committee
On a tied party-line vote, the nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to be the next Supreme Court justice advanced out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday afternoon.
Jackson's confirmation heads to a vote on the Senate floor. Barring an unprecedented surprise, her appointment to the Supreme Court is all but assured now that Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Mitt Romney (Utah) confirmed they support her nomination.
Per The Hill:
“After multiple in-depth conversations with Judge Jackson and deliberative review of her record and recent hearings, I will support her historic nomination to be an Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court,” Murkowski said in a statement.
Romney said he had concluded that Jackson was “a well-qualified jurist and a person of honor.”
The Senate and the House will both be out for a two-week Easter recess starting Friday, so it is anticipated that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) will bring Jackson's nomination in front of the full Senate this week ahead of the break.
Flashback: First Republican Pledges to Support KBJ — And Will More Join?
After focusing on swing Democrat votes in last week's Hill Happenings, let's take a look at a few middle-of-the-road Republicans and find out where they stand on Judge Jackson's confirmation!
Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) has stated that she will vote in support of Jackson.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) has indicated that he will oppose Jackson's confirmation. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Graham voted against advancing her nomination on Monday afternoon. In 2013 and again last year, Graham previously voted to confirm Jackson to the federal bench.
Sen. Roy Blunt (Mo.) told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that he wholeheartedly supports the idea of putting the first Black woman on the Supreme Court. However, he couldn't vote for President Biden's nominee, citing disagreements with her judicial philosophy.
Meanwhile, House Votes to Decriminalize Cannabis — Is the Senate Next?
The House voted 220 to 204 last week to pass the “Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act” also known as the “MORE” Act. The chance that the legislation will pass the Senate still remains slim. Republican Reps. Brian Mast and Matt Gaetz of Florida, as well as Californian Tom McClintock, voted in support of the bill.

Mitt approves of light sentences for child molesters and child pornographers. How he continues to have the support of the Mormon Church is beyond me. At 75 years old I think it’s time for Mitt to retire.
