Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) called the police Saturday night when an armed man allegedly threatened to kill the congresswoman while standing outside her home.
Officers arrived shortly to find a 48-year-old man armed with a .40-caliber handgun “standing the middle of the street.”
According to the police report, a neighbor reported that the man yelled, “Go back to India, I’m going to kill you.”
The man, who remains unnamed, lives within half a mile of Jayapal.
The Seattle Times has more on the developing story:
A judge on Monday ordered the man remain jailed in lieu of $500,000 bail but denied prosecutors’ request for an anti-harassment order protecting Jayapal, said Casey McNerthney, a prosecutors spokesperson.
Jayapal, 56, is a former state senator who became the first Indian American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016. A Democrat, Jayapal represents Washington’s 7th Congressional District, which includes most of Seattle. Jayapal was born in India and came to the U.S. at 16 to begin college at Georgetown University.
“Congresswoman Jayapal confirms that incidents occurred at her Seattle home on Saturday night when she was present. The Congresswoman and her family are safe and appreciate the many calls and good wishes she is receiving from constituents,” spokesperson Siham Zniber wrote in an emailed statement Monday evening. “She is very grateful for the swift and professional response from the Seattle Police Department, the U.S. Capitol Police, and the FBI investigators who are working together diligently on the investigation and ensuring that she and her family stay safe.”
Jayapal declined further comment because a police investigation is ongoing, the statement said.
Jayapal serves as the chair of the House Progressive Caucus. Her voting record frequently aligns with the Squad. According to National Public Radio, the Seattle-area representative supports diverting funds from police departments and using that money on social services.

I do not understand this as she is on the same side as the violent extremists so why would they attack her. I lived in Washington State for 27 years in Spokane, on the conservative normal side of the state. I moved down to Texas in 1992 because the Communist ideas from Western Washington were starting to infect the powers to be in Spokane. I will never ever return to Washington.

What have I been saying all along? Diversity brings division and strife. Here you have a typical case of an immigrant you comes to the US and wants to change it. An anti-harassment order is a piece of paper. Paper will not stop a .40 cal. A .45 will.
